Education & Career Development
At The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Kingsport

Our Goal

We strive to provide a world-class Club experience that puts success within reach of every young person who walks through our doors, putting them on track to graduate from high school with a plan for the future. Our goal is for every Club member to:

  • Graduate from high school ready for college, trade school, military or employment.
  • Adopt healthy eating habits, engage in regular physical activity and avoid high-risk behaviors such as consumption of alcohol, tobacco and drugs.
  • Be an engaged citizen who cares about the community, registers to vote and models strong character.

Our Club provides a safe, caring environment for kids after school & during the summer. We offer a variety of fun, educational programs.

What we teach our Club Kids:

  • STEM
  • Creativity & Innovation
  • Health & Wellness
  • Fitness Programs & Team Sports
  • Outdoor & Environmental Education
  • Summer Learning Loss Prevention
  • Technology
  • Academic Enrichment
  • The Arts

In 2021, 18.9% of Kingsport residents had an income below poverty level.

In order to break the cycle of poverty in Kingsport, staff at Boys & Girls Club of Greater Kingsport work tirelessly to ensure that all youth served remain on track to graduate high school on time by providing the tools they need to succeed. Research has shown that students who could not read on grade level by the end of their third-grade year were four times more likely to drop out of high school. Club staff and volunteers understand that the drop out cycle begins at a very young age, which is in part why we work especially hard to educate and support our youngest members.

TEEN WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM WITH GRANT FUNDING FROM THE TRUIST FOUNDATION

Opportunities for teens to explore career paths

The Club was awarded a grant to create a program that provides opportunities for teens to virtually explore and learn about careers in aviation, automotive, healthcare, construction, hospitality, manufacturing and more with a Transfr VR Headset and Career Exploration License. The Transfr VR Career Simulations will provide teens an immersive learning opportunity in a variety of career fields that emulate real life working conditions and requirements for the jobs. These simulations can help teens to make an informed decision about their future career choices.

The program launches in the first quarter of 2024

Project Learn

Project Learn reinforces the academic enrichment and school engagement of young people during the time they spend at the Club.

Students do much better in school when they spend their non-school hours engaged in fun, but academically beneficial, activities. Through Project Learn, Club staff use all the areas and programs in the Club to create opportunities for these high-yield learning activities, including leisure reading, writing activities, discussions with knowledgeable adults, helping others, homework help, tutoring and games that develop young people’s cognitive skills. Project Learn also emphasizes parent involvement as well as collaboration between Club and school professionals.

POWER HOUR

Making Minutes Count

Power Hour: Making Minutes Count helps Club members ages 6-18 achieve academic success by providing homework help, tutoring and high-yield learning activities and encouraging members to become self-directed learners.

Designed specifically to help kids and teens with homework, this program is available after school at Clubs. Dedicated youth development professionals and volunteers supervise each session and help youth members complete their assignments for the day. When they finish their work, they may choose to participate in a variety of other engaging and educational activities to develop their skills even further.

Power Hour is a great opportunity for kids and teens to get their homework completed in a quiet place with support from trained, caring staff at a Boys & Girls Club.
